I suspect (but am not sure) that it picked Word, because under Windows associations, Word is the association for an RTF document. You can't just embed the doc file, or at least, I don't know how to do that. In the ordinary Windoze file system, an RTF file doesn't have its document wrapped up inside the file.

No File Association with MS Word Documents
When an association like .doc fails or points to an undesireable program, I run regedit, search for .doc, and delete the entry. Close regedit. Doubleclick on a .doc file, Windows asks what program to use and I choose Word from the list (if not listed, click "Choose" and find word.exe in C:\program files\office.
