DOC name in the Explorer window. Since DOC was associated with WINWORD.EXE, the document opened in the already-open instance of Word. Help: can't open files
The problem is that after the Win XP installation, the list of installed components included Word 2000. This has never been installed in this machine. Somewhere in the nebulous installation process, the program file associated with the double-click on .doc files got associated with Word 2000.

To reset the association: Select a *.doc file in Windows Explorer. Shift-right-click it, and choose "Open with" from the menu.
